Is Anyone Out There?

Being a Special Education Itinerant Teacher (SEIT) in NYC has to be one of the most isolating professions out there.  NYC alone can make you feel like a small fish in a big pond.  Being a SEIT compounds it a hundredfold.  At least...this has been my experience so far.

I'm creating this blog as a forum for all the lonely teachers out there that feel the need for support and guidance. In my career so far, I've found that the most willing and helpful mentors I've had were fellow new teachers.  We are young, motivated, looking for answers, and willing to cooperatively problem solve.  This blogspot is for you.

  1. I have been a SEIT for 8 years and much of what you say is true. Although it is very rewarding, it is also very isolating. Having taught in the public schools for a while I made the switch when I had children. Sept. and Oct. are stressful months due to lack of cases. I can't imagine being a SEIT provider as a brand new teacher. It must be frustrating and lonely. You really have to seek out experienced teachers for ideas and professional support.

  2. You are right. You feel like a lonely little entity out there but the autonomy can't be beat. I worked in the classroom for many years and have been a SEIT for 3 and can say the pros outweigh the cons. I am entering back into SEIT after going back into the classroom last year...sigh you are right about the cases going to agency veterans too! I need work! what agency are you with. If you don't want to shout it out you can email me:
